The Bronco is built off a body-on-frame construction reminiscent of a pickup truck, rugged but stiffer to turn. By contrast, the Bronco Sport has a unibody construction like those found on larger sedans and crossovers. Recent versions of the Bronco Sport ride on the same underbody as the Ford Escape. As the slightly smaller of the two, the Sport can be handy in cities or parking lots, although both are versatile on and off the pavement.
Apart from style, the 2022 Bronco Sport shows how far Ford is willing to go to make a smaller off-road SUV one of the most powerful and useful. For instance, the included terrain management system lets you switch in and out of five available driving modes: Normal, Eco, Sport, Sand, and Slippery. However, the 2022 Bronco Sport can also tow with the right equipment. Let's go over the current Bronco Sport's available tow packages and how those affect its towing capacity.
The 2022 Bronco Sport tows either 2,000 or 2,200 lbs once you equip it with the Class II Trailer Tow Package. The ranges would be acceptable for a larger SUV but are pretty impressive on the compact Bronco Sport. The roof is also rated to support up to 600 lbs of static weight, great for kayaks, bikes, and more.
If you want that highest possible tow rating of 2,200 lbs, you'll need to get the Class II Trailer Tow Package on the Badlands trim level. Depending on availability, it may become possible to upgrade the lower models to this level of power soon. Even if not, you can still get the Class II Trailer Tow Package on other trims, giving you a towing capacity of 2,000 lbs.
At present, the Class II Trailer Tow Package is the only Bronco Sport tow package, and models without it aren't rated for traditional towing. The Class II Trailer Tow group also comes with Trailer Sway Control, a safety feature that discourages any trailers from leaning during a turn.
If you intend to tow with the Bronco Sport, you'll probably need the Class II Trailer Tow Package if you aren't using a braked trailer and need to pull something over 500 lbs, just for safety. However, that isn't the only optional package you can use to customize the SUV. Some other useful options include Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist+, an active safety suite that expands from the other Co-Pilot360 standard equipment by adding stop-and-go adaptive cruise control with automatic lane centering, pedestrian-detecting automatic emergency braking, and more.
The biggest factor when shopping for a new Bronco Sport will usually be the trim level. The Badlands, for instance, has a trim-exclusive package called the Premium available, which adds leather-trimmed power front seats, a 10-speaker audio system with a subwoofer, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear parking sensors, and other pleasant upgrades. Or you could keep it simple with the starting model and stick to the tow package or somewhere in between; it's up to you.
Compared to the Bronco, this SUV is a bit smaller, more off-road-focused, and lower in price. Its engines aren't quite as powerful, leading to no actual tow ratings for 2022 unless you equip the Class II Trailer Tow Package. When you do, you'll get 2,200 lbs of maximum towing out of the Badlands trim level and 2,000 lbs for the other trims.
